LEEF; Lover of Literature, Language, Lyrics, Legends & Lore
Kwil.Club for Creative Inner Children of ALL Ages
I have thirty years of experience as a teacher, librarian and counsellor using a variety of approaches depending on the needs and wishes of the individual. I have worked enthusiastically with hundreds of children, ‘tweens,’ teens, and parents in public education and private practice.
iose as it sounds, I now consider myself an ‘actualization advocate’ who aspires to the fullest realization of all human potential. What we believe, we may achieve. It is our destination, coupled with our individual and collective spirit, that determines our journey. The dreamer dreams the dream.
While I don’t have all the answers, I do know and live the questions deeply. Together, we may gain clarity, awareness and understanding through continuing conversation. To quote Rumi, ‘Words that come from the heart will enter the heart.’
I am infinitely more interested in the individual person in ever-expanding awareness, understanding and action than any particular technique, program or practice, however popular or trendy at the time. Responsive engagement is proactive, anticipatory, present-moment, and also deeply reflective. This tends to be more evolutionary than reactive, robotic or revisionist methods. Synergy!
Regardless of circumstance, in the words of O'Donohue, ‘One of the deepest longings of the human soul is to be seen.’ We see and experience ourselves in trust-based reflection, often against the backdrop of our own and others’ beliefs about who we are and what matters for a fulfilling and joyous life.

Theories & Techniques
Circling back to O'Donohue's quotation about the human soul's longing to be seen mentioned above, it is equally important to consider the human soul's need to be heard. As Karl A. Menninger says, "Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand."
Indeed. We already know what we know. There is more to gain (and give!) by listening without the distraction of formulating an "answer." As parents, teachers, and counsellors, we cannot connect or create with children, students and clients unless we spend time in heartfelt presence. As C.S. Lewis said, "Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the work." Proximity and presence are the essence of all parenting, teaching, and counselling. Distance, disconnection and distraction impede attachment and social-emotional attunement.
Whether as a family member, friend, or human being in any personal or professional role, there is immense therapeutic power in the capacity to listen. Just listen. Nothing is harder. Or more profound. It costs nothing. It gives much. Between each word, between each sentence, there is the silence. This is the gap where the love and the light get in. The connection is deeper and more transcendent than just the twist or tumble of words. As Leonardo da Vinci said, "The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding." Empathize. Encourage. But most importantly. . .
